Replacement of Michigan River Bridge to Begin Thursday
JACKSON COUNTY – Beginning Thursday, August 9, 2012, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will start construction on the Michigan River Bridge replacement on State Highway (SH) 125. Located just one mile north of Walden, the Michigan River Bridge was built in 1937 and is structurally deficient.
Over the next several months, crews will perform drainage work, construct a new box culvert to replace the bridge structure, and build detours on each side of the existing bridge. Beginning in mid-November, traffic will be diverted onto the detours, and crews will remove the old bridge, complete the new structure, pave the roadway, place pavement marking, and reset traffic signs. Once traffic returns to the new roadway, detours will be removed and the surrounding area will be returned to its original state.
Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential work taking place at night and on weekends. Speed limits will be reduced to 35 MPH through the work zone and intermittent traffic delays of up to 10 minutes may occur throughout construction to allow equipment to access the work zone. When the detour around the old bridge is in place, there will be a 24 hour a day speed reduction, a 10 feet wide load restriction, and a weight limit restriction of 85,000 pounds. Motorists are reminded to obey all road signs and flaggers, and to drive Slow for the Cone Zone.
American Civil Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for this $1.5 million bridge project that is funded by CDOT and the Federal Highway Administration.
