Both Lanes of Westbound I-70 Remain Closed at Dotsero
EAGLE COUNTY — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is keeping both lanes of westbound I-70 closed at mile marker 133, the Dotsero exit, as crews work to clean up materials spilled during a single vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 2 a.m. this morning.
During the accident, approximately 60 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled from the tank of a semi carrying a load of 42,000 pounds of scrap aluminum. Hazmat crews are on site to clean up the diesel, which spilled mostly on the highway itself, and CDOT maintenance crews are working to untangle the aluminum from the semi so the truck can be removed from the highway.
The closure has caused significant backups and delays on westbound I-70. Motorists are being rerouted to State Highway (SH) 131 to Steamboat Springs, then to US 40 to Craig, and then south via SH 13 to Rifle. Eastbound traffic is not impacted by the closure. There is no estimated time of reopening.
