Resurfacing Project Set to Begin Next Week on Colfax Avenue

July 26, 2012 - NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECT - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - JEFFERSON COUNTY — On Sunday, July 29, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin a resurfacing project on Colfax Avenue (US 40) between Cole Boulevard and Simms Street. Crews will resurface a 1.5 mile stretch of Colfax Avenue that is currently in poor condition.

“This portion of Colfax Avenue was last paved in 1995 and is currently one of the worst stretches of pavement in the Denver metro area with widespread cracking,” said CDOT Pavement Manager Bob Mero.  “Over the years, our maintenance crews have performed a variety of activities to keep the roadway serviceable, but this resurfacing project will greatly improve the overall condition and driving surface of the roadway.”

Typically, once a roadway is in poor condition, it must be completely reconstructed or undergo a major rehabilitation to bring it to good condition.  Rather than reconstruct or rehabilitate the roadway, this resurfacing project will remove two inches of existing asphalt and replace it with 2.5 inches of new asphalt, which will extend the life of the roadway by approximately 10 years.

Throughout the project, motorists can expect various single lane closures on eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Access to residences and businesses will remain open during construction and temporary access points will be provided and signed when necessary.

Delays are expected through the construction zone and alternate routes. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers, and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

Martin Marietta Materials is the contractor for this $1.1 million project scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2012.
