Powers Paving Begins
Several weeks of preparation has taken place prior to the start of paving operations this week, including deep asphalt repairs where the highway was rutted, guardrail installation and drainage improvements.
Project hours each week are 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday. Rotomilling and paving will be completed in four phases:
- Milton E. Proby Parkway north to Fountain Boulevard
- Fountain south to Milton E. Proby
- Platte Avenue north to Woodmen Road
- Woodman Road to Platte
While work is taking place, drivers can expect single or double lane closures on northbound and/or southbound Powers. One lane of traffic will be open at all times while work is taking place. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph through the work zone.
“The surface condition for the Proby to Fountain section of Powers is rated in poor condition, with the segment between Platte and Woodmen rated anywhere from fair to good condition,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Mark Andrew. “We don’t know when it was paved last since it only became a state highway less than five years ago but our maintenance forces have paved segments of the roadway since it was acquired. But it’s in need of a full-scale resurfacing since we’re seeing surface cracking, and moderate to severe rutting on the southern segment.”
The $10.3 million project, contracted to Rocky Mountain Materials & Asphalt Inc. of Colorado Springs, Colo. is scheduled for completion in September 2012.
