Clear Creek Canyon Reopens Friday
JEFFERSON COUNTY – U.S. 6 though Clear Creek Canyon opens for the weekend tomorrow at 10 a.m. between the junction of State Highways (SH) 58 and 93 in Golden and SH 119.
The final weekly closure resumes on Sunday, June 24, at 11 p.m. It will remain closed until Friday, June 29, at 10 a.m., when all the work requiring weekly road closures is scheduled to be complete.
When the highway is closed, the detour to Black Hawk/Central City is: I-70 west to Exit 244, east on U.S. 6 three miles to SH 119, north on SH 119 OR I-70 to Central City Parkway (Exit 243).
The closure is required to allow fiber optics to be installed along U.S. 6, which will provide cell phone coverage and other services into an area where it is currently unavailable. In addition to the fiber installation, CDOT is conducting other operations in the canyon while the road is closed, such as rock mitigation and tunnel work.
While U.S. 6 is closed, individual boaters and kayakers are not allowed to travel the highway between Golden and SH 119. However, recreational users of Clear Creek can still drop into the water anywhere west of the SH 119 junction and exit the creek in Golden. Bicyclists never are allowed to travel U.S. 6 through Clear Creek Canyon.
