Trip Travel Times Now Posted Between Boulder and Denver

May 3, 2012 - TRAVEL ADVISORY - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - Information will help motorists better plan for travel.

BOULDER/JEFFERSON COUNTIES — Beginning today, Thursday, May 3, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is displaying trip travel times on the US 36 corridor between Boulder and Denver in an effort to provide improved traveler information to motorists.

Existing electronic message signs above the highways are now presenting the approximate time it takes to travel from Denver to Boulder, including locations along the way such as Wadsworth, McCaslin Boulevard, and Foothills Parkway. From Boulder to Denver, signs include times to locations such as Wadsworth, Sheridan Boulevard, and I-25.

Signs that will display information from Boulder to Denver are located at:

  • Eastbound US 36 at Colorado Avenue
  • Eastbound US 36 at Baseline Road
  • Eastbound Foothills Parkway at US 36
  • Eastbound US 36 at Wadsworth

Signs that will display information from Denver to Boulder are located at:

  • Westbound US 36 at Wadsworth
  • Westbound US 36 at 88th Avenue

This information will provide real-time travel information, allowing drivers to estimate how long their trip will take based on present traffic conditions. It also is useful for comparing normal travel times with the current estimated travel time, allowing drivers to consider the use of alternate routes, if necessary, to help ease traffic congestion.

The system on US 36 collects data from side-fire speed sensors on the highway and toll transponders. Speed, volume, and road segment travel data is calculated and then the estimated travel time is displayed.  CDOT does not have access to any personal or identifying information on a vehicle and information is deleted from the system within two hours.

Travel times are not predictive, but can provide a snapshot of current highway traffic and conditions.  Travel time messages and information will not be available during times traffic is stopped or a major incident results in a highway closure.

CDOT currently displays travel time data on electronic signs on I-70 between Denver and Vail, on I-25 near 6th and 84th avenues, between Denver and Colorado Springs, and along C-470 and the 6th Avenue Freeway (US 6).
