Single Lane Closures Start Sunday on I-25 at State Highway 392

May 4, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - Additional lane closures will be necessary on I-25 frontage road.

LARIMER/WELD COUNTIES — Beginning Sunday, May 6 and lasting through Thursday, May 10 from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. each evening, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close varying lanes of northbound and southbound I-25 at the State Highway (SH) 392 intersection for approximately a half of a mile in each direction in order to wash and paint the new SH 392 bridge, as well as to remove equipment that is no longer needed. The work is part of an ongoing project that will not only improve the I-25/SH 392 interchange, but will also result in a newly aligned frontage road on the west side of I-25 to better accommodate traffic volumes in the area.

In addition to the closures on I-25, there will be additional closures on the I-25 frontage road both north and south of SH 392 in both directions to allow for concrete work and asphalt paving. Motorists should plan to use alternative routes, should expect slowing in the area, and should allow plenty of time to travel through the detours. As always, CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all road signs and flaggers, and to drive Slow for the Cone Zone.

Motorists should be aware that there is an upcoming resurfacing project that will take place on SH 392 directly east of this interchange improvement project. The new project is expected to start later this month, and may create additional travel impacts in the area. Details about the SH 392 resurfacing project will be forthcoming.

Motorists can expect the following lane closures and detour routes this week:

  • Sunday, May 6 through Thursday, May 10 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each evening: Various single lane closures of I-25 in both northbound and southbound directions at SH 392 for washing and painting the bridge as well as the removal of bridge shoring and formwork.
  • Sunday, May 6 from 5 a.m. to midnight (open Monday, May 7 in the morning): The southbound and northbound lanes of the west frontage road will remain closed south of SH 392 for approximately ½ mile for earthwork, concrete work, and asphalt paving. Closure of the frontage road north of SH 392 may also be needed next week, with dates and times to be announced
    • From SH 392, traffic heading northbound on the frontage road will be detoured east on SH 392 to Larimer County Road 5, then north to Kechter Drive, then west to the frontage road; or west on SH 392 to Timberline Road, then north to Kechter Drive, then east to the west frontage road.
    • From SH 392, traffic heading southbound on the frontage road will be detoured west to Larimer County Road 9, then south to Larimer County Road 30, then east to the frontage road; or south on I-25 to Crossroads Boulevard, then east on Crossroads Boulevard to the frontage road.
    • From the frontage road north of SH 392, traffic heading southbound will be detoured north to Kechter Drive, then east to Larimer County Road 5 and south to SH 392; or west to Timberline Road, then south to SH 392.
    • From the frontage road south of SH 392, traffic heading northbound will be detoured south to Larimer County Road 30, west to Larimer County Road 9, then north to SH 392.
  • Sunday, May 13 from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, May 14:  Various eastbound and westbound lanes at SH 392 from County Road 5 to frontage road will be closed for restriping and traffic alignment as well as to set concrete barrier. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic.
  • Sunday, May 13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, May 14: A single lane of the southbound I-25 on-ramp from SH 392 will be closed to remove concrete barriers and to install guardrail on the ramp.
    • Traffic will be detoured to the frontage road to travel south to Crossroads Road, where motorists can then access I-25.

This work is part of a $17.5 million project that replaces the SH 392 bridge over I-25 with one that is wider to accommodate two lanes in each direction as well as a left-turn lane in each direction. There will also be a six-foot bike lane and a 6.5-foot sidewalk on each side of the bridge. The frontage road on the west side of the interchange will be realigned, and the ramps will be designed to accommodate more traffic. In addition, an expanded 90-space carpool/vanpool lot will be constructed in the southwest corner of the interchange.

Edward Kraemer and Sons, Inc. is the contractor for this project. The project is being funded by CDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, the City of Fort Collins, and the Town of Windsor.
