May 7, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has rescheduled bridge girder installation originally set for tonight, May 7th, to now take place Tuesday, May 8th, due to inclement weather.

DENVER – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has rescheduled bridge girder installation originally set for tonight, May 7th, to now take place Tuesday, May 8th, due to inclement weather.  Weather permitting, CDOT will install twelve bridge girders over east and west Colfax for the new Federal Boulevard (State Highway 88) bridge over Colfax Avenue (US 40) tomorrow night.  The work will require full closures of Colfax Avenue and Federal Boulevard, weather permitting.

To install the girders, the following closures will be in place Tuesday, May 8th:

  • Eastbound and Westbound Colfax Avenue: All lanes of eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue at Federal Boulevard will be closed Tuesday night from 6 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. the next day. Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closure.
  • Northbound and Southbound Federal Boulevard at Colfax Avenue: All lanes of northbound and southbound Federal Boulevard at Colfax Avenue will be closed Tuesday night from 6 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. the next day. Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closure.

Major delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

This work is part of a project that replaces the Federal Boulevard bridge over Colfax Avenue with one that is wider to accommodate eight-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge as well as curb and gutter in the median. The existing bridge was originally constructed in 1960 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges.

Jalisco International, Inc. is the contractor for this $5.1 million project, which is scheduled to be complete in February 2013. The project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair and replace poor bridges.
