US 160 Bridge Improvements at US 550 Junction, West Edge of Durango

April 3, 2012 - PROJECT UPDATE - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - DURANGO - On Monday, March 26, work will begin to repair the four- lane bridge on US 160, just west of the US 550 junction (near the Double Tree Hotel).

The 45-year-old bridge, which lies between Roosa Avenue and Camino Del Rio (mile marker 83) is in need of routine maintenance, as previous work done on the structure was in 2007.

The project involves concrete bridge deck repairs and rehabilitation. Construction consists of fixing the bridge curb, patching the bridge deck to repair holes and uneven driving conditions and resurfacing the deck with two inches of new concrete.

G.A. Western Construction of Palisade is the contractor for this $479,285 project, which is scheduled for completion on May 23, 2012.

GENERAL US 160 TRAFFIC IMPACTS:  Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., though work may extend to 8PM when necessary. A single lane of traffic in both east- and westbound directions will remain open at all times. Two-lane traffic in the eastbound direction will be maintained from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 4:00-6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, to accommodate peak period/peak directional travel.

ROOSA AVENUE IMPACTS: Due to the length and area required for a safe project work zone and safe turning movements, the use of Roosa Avenue will be restricted, likely 24-7, through the project’s duration (any changes to this configuration will be publicized and well signed:

  • Southbound Roosa Avenue:  no left turns onto US 160 (towards town); right turns only
  • Westbound US 160 (heading out of town): no right turns onto northbound Roosa Avenue
  • Eastbound US 160 (heading into town): no left turns onto northbound Roosa Avenue
  • PLEASE NOTE:  Roosa access to the under-bridge path leading to the dog park will remain open.

On Tuesday, April 3, half (5 feet) of the pedestrian / bike path along the east side of the bridge will be closed to allow for repairs to the under side of the bridge deck. Pedestrians and cyclist should exercise caution when using the path as machinery and crews will be entering and exiting the pathway.
