Trip Travel Times Now Posted to DIA

April 5, 2012 - Central Eastern Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK/JEFFERSON COUNTIES – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is now displaying trip travel times to Denver International Airport along eastbound Interstate 70, from Hidden Valley to Wheat Ridge, in an effort to provide improved traveler information to motorists.

Electronic messages signs above the highway are presenting the approximate time it is taking to travel to DIA from Hidden Valley, Evergreen Parkway and 32nd Avenue.  The signs also are displaying travel times to C-470, Wadsworth Boulevard, and the Mousetrap (I-25).

This information will provide real-time travel information, allowing drivers to estimate how long their trip will take, based on present traffic conditions.  It also is useful for comparing normal travel times with the current estimated travel time, allowing drivers to consider the use of alternate routes, if necessary, to help ease traffic congestion.

The system on I-70 is collecting data from side-fire speed sensors and toll transponders.  Speed, volume, and road segment travel data is calculated and then the estimated travel time is displayed.  CDOT does not have access to any personal or identifying information on a vehicle and information is deleted from the system within two hours.

Travel times are not predictive but provide a snapshot of current highway traffic and conditions.  Travel time messages and information will not be available during times traffic is stopped or a major incident results in a highway closure.

Additional signs may be activated within Denver at a later date with DIA travel times.  CDOT currently is displaying travel time data on electronic signs on I-70 between Denver and Vail, on I-25 near 6th and 84th avenues, and between Denver and Colorado Springs, and along C-470 and the 6th Avenue Freeway (U.S. 6).
