Traffic Realignment to Cause Delays on I-25 Next Week
To complete the work, there will be triple lane closures on northbound and southbound I-25 and major delays are expected. Alternate routes are strongly advised.
“We just completed a portion of the new northbound structure and will soon begin construction of a portion of the southbound structure,” said CDOT Project Engineer Chris Paiz. “After the realignment this week, traffic on I-25 will remain in this configuration until the next phase of construction begins later this year or early next year.”
Motorists can expect the following lane closures April 29th and May 1st, weather permitting, for the traffic realignment:
- Northbound I-25 between Colfax Avenue and 23rd Avenue: Three lanes of northbound I-25 will be closed from 7 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. on Monday to allow crews to realign traffic. The ramp from Colfax Avenue to northbound I-25 and the on and off-ramps at 17th Avenue will also be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. on Monday. Detour routes will be in place.
- Southbound I-25 between 23rd Avenue and Colfax Avenue: Three lanes of southbound I-25 will be closed from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. on Wednesday to allow crews to realign traffic. The ramp from southbound I-25 to Colfax Avenue and the ramp from 23rd Avenue to southbound I-25 will also be closed from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Detour routes will be in place.
In addition, motorists can expect various single and double lane closures on northbound and southbound I-25 between Colfax Avenue and 23rd Avenue on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. The ramp from southbound I-25 to Colfax Avenue and the ramp from 23rd Avenue to southbound I-25 will also be closed on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Major delays are possible on the detour routes and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to plan ahead, obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.
The work is part of a bridge replacement project on I-25 between Colfax Avenue and 23rd Avenue. The existing I-25 bridges over the South Platte River were originally constructed in 1951 and are in poor condition. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by the end of August 2013.
Lawrence Construction Co. is the contractor for this $16.3 million project, which is being funded with federal and state funds.
