I-25 West Frontage Road Closed Starting Sunday at State Highway 392 Intersection
LARIMER/WELD COUNTIES — Beginning Sunday, April 22 at 5 a.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close the I-25 west frontage road in both directions north and south of the State Highway (SH) 392 intersection for approximately a half of a mile in each direction in order to tie the new asphalt roadway pieces together. The work is part of an ongoing project that will not only improve the I-25/SH 392 interchange, but will also result in a newly aligned frontage road on the west side of I-25 to better accommodate traffic volumes in the area.
The frontage road will remain closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week through midnight on Sunday, April 29 (opening Monday morning), when the north side of SH 392 will reopen. The south side of the frontage road will remain closed until Sunday night, May 6, in both the northbound and southbound directions. Additionally, there will be a brief closure on Tuesday, April 24 at 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25 in the eastbound and westbound lanes of SH 392 at the west frontage road intersection. Traffic will be paused briefly and then released so crews can perform work on the new roadway.
Due to the frontage road closure, motorists should plan to use alternative routes, should expect slowing in the area, and should allow plenty of time to travel through the detours. As always, CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all road signs and flaggers, and to drive Slow for the Cone Zone.
Motorists can expect the following lane closures and detour routes this week:
- Sunday, April 22 at 5 a.m. through Sunday, April 29 at midnight (open by Monday morning): The southbound and northbound lanes of the west frontage road will be closed north and south of SH 392 for approximately ½ mile in each direction for earthwork, concrete, and asphalt paving.
- From SH 392, traffic heading northbound on the north side of the frontage road will be detoured east on SH 392 to Larimer County Road 5, then north to Kechter Drive, then west to the frontage road; or west on SH 392 to Timberline Road, then north to Kechter Drive, then east to the west frontage road.
- From SH 392, traffic heading southbound on the south side of the west frontage road will be detoured west to Larimer County Road 9, then south to Larimer County Road 30, then east to the west frontage road; or south on I-25 to Crossroads Boulevard, then east on Crossroads Boulevard to the west frontage road.
- From the north side of the west frontage road, traffic heading southbound will be detoured north to Kechter Drive, then east to Larimer County Road 5 and south to SH 392; or west to Timberline Road, then south to SH 392.
- From the south side of the west frontage road, traffic heading northbound will be detoured south to Larimer County Road 30, west to Larimer County Road 9, then north to SH 392.
- Tuesday, April 24 at 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25: The eastbound and westbound lanes of SH 392 will be closed for a short duration at the west frontage road intersection. Traffic will be paused briefly and then released.
This work is part of a $17.5 million project that replaces the SH 392 bridge over I-25 with one that is wider to accommodate two lanes in each direction as well as a left-turn lane in each direction. There will also be a six-foot bike lane and a 6.5-foot sidewalk on each side of the bridge. The frontage road on the west side of the interchange will be realigned, and the ramps will be designed to accommodate more traffic. In addition, an expanded 90-space carpool/vanpool lot will be constructed in the southwest corner of the interchange.
Edward Kraemer and Sons, Inc. is the contractor for this project. The project is being funded by CDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, the City of Fort Collins, and the Town of Windsor.
