Highway 36 Bridge Project Underway Next Week
ADAMS/ARAPAHOE COUNTIES – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins a project next week to replace the Comanche Creek Bridge on State Highway 36, at the east end of Strasburg (picture attached below).
Beginning on Monday, April 23, eastbound and westbound Highway 36 will be closed to all traffic at the bridge site, just east of Monroe Street. All traffic will detour about three miles via Monroe Street/Strasburg Road, 26th Avenue and Headlight Road during construction. Access remains up to the closure points for local residents and businesses.
The project is scheduled for completion in June 2012
In addition to removing the old structure and new bridge construction, the project includes new asphalt pavement on the bridge and approaches, guardrails, drainage improvements, seeding, and mulching.
“The current timber bridge was built in 1932 and is rated in poor condition,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Dole Grebenik. “We’re building a new concrete structure that has a design life of 75 years, providing a long-term improvement to Colorado’s highway system. The new bridge will be 40 feet wide, which will offer improved safety over the existing, substandard width of 30 feet. It will accommodate a shoulder on each side as well, which coupled with modern bridge rail, will improve safety in the area.”
Jalisco International Inc. of Commerce City, CO. is the project’s prime contractor.
The $1.3 million project is funded through the Statewide Bridge Enterprise, a government-owned business entity within CDOT. Created as part of the FASTER (Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery) legislation, its goal is to finance, repair, reconstruct or replace any bridge designated as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete, and rated “poor” by CDOT. “This project is using an innovative contracting method, providing a monetary incentive to minimize the construction time and impacts to local residents,” added Grebenik.
