Girder Installation to Close I-25 at 84th Avenue Tonight and Tomorrow Night
“We are now constructing the southern portion of the new bridge, which will complete the construction of the structure,” said Project Engineer Daryl Miller. “Since we will be installing girders over I-25, it is essential for the safety of the traveling public that we completely close the Interstate as well as 84th Avenue.”
To complete the work, the following lane closures will be in place:
• Southbound I-25 near 84th Avenue: One lane of southbound I-25 will be closed each night at 8 p.m. with all lanes closing at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the next day. Detour: Motorists will be detoured via the on and off-ramps at 84th Avenue. Uniformed traffic control will be on site to direct motorists through the work zone.
• Northbound I-25 near 84th Avenue: One lane of northbound I-25 will be closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday night only with all lanes closing at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Detour: Motorists will be detoured via the on and off-ramps at 84th Avenue. Uniformed traffic control will be on site to direct motorists through the work zone.
• 84th Avenue over I-25: All lanes of eastbound and westbound 84th Avenue will be closed each night from 9 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. the next day. Detour: Motorists on westbound 84th Avenue can take Washington Street north to Thornton Parkway. Take Thornton Parkway west to Huron Street and Huron Street south to 84th Avenue. Motorists one eastbound 84th Avenue will take Huron Street north to Thornton Parkway. Take Thornton Parkway east to Washington Street and Washington Street south to 84th Avenue.
Major delays are possible on I-25 and 84th Avenue and alternate routes are strongly advised. Motorists can take either Huron Street or Washington Street to 104th Avenue to avoid the construction zone. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
This work is part of a project that replaces the 84th Avenue bridge over I-25. The original bridge was constructed in 1959 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges. The new bridge will be wider to accommodate an additional left turn lane from eastbound 84th Avenue to northbound I-25. In addition, there will be 10-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
Zak Dirt, Inc. is the contractor for this $8 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of October 2012. The majority of the project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair or replace poor bridges. The City of Thornton is funding the architectural enhancements such as the decorative lighting and bridge monuments.
