Girder Installation to Close I-225 at Colfax Avenue Saturday Night
“We are installing girders for the new 17th Place bridge over I-225 as part of the last phase of this interchange improvement project,” said CDOT Project Engineer George Warda. “Since the work takes place over I-225, we must completely close the highway for the duration of the work.”
During the closure, the following detour routes will be in place:
- Northbound I-225: Motorists on northbound I-225 will exit onto Colfax Avenue and take either Peoria Street or Chambers Road to I-70.
- Southbound I-225: Motorists on southbound I-225 will be detoured via the off and on-ramps at Colfax Avenue.
While uniformed traffic control will be located along the detour routes, major delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
The girder installation is part of a project that combines the third and fourth phases of the I-225/Colfax Avenue interchange improvement project. The final project constructs the southbound I-225 slip-ramp from 17th Place and widens the west side of the I-225 bridge over Colfax Avenue to accommodate the new slip-ramp. The northbound I-225 on-ramp from Colfax Avenue will be reconstructed to provide an elevated collector/distributor road between Colfax Avenue and 17th Place. In addition, the northbound I-225 slip-ramp will be reconstructed to provide access to 17th Place and the new 17th Place bridge over I-225 will be constructed.
SEMA Construction Co. is the contractor for the $11 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of February 2013.
In addition to this project, the second phase of the I-225/Colfax Avenue reconstruction project is also underway and constructs the southbound off-ramp to 17th Avenue and Colfax Avenue along with the southern portion of 17th Avenue to serve inbound traffic. Hamon Contractors, Inc. is the contractor for this $17.9 million project that is scheduled to be complete by the end of May 2012.
