Entrance to Boulder Valley School District Closed for Nine Days Starting Monday
BOULDER COUNTY — Starting Monday, March 26 at 7 a.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close the signalized entrance to the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) off of Arapahoe Road for nine days to install a storm drain underneath the roadway. The work is part of the State Highway (SH) 7 Cherryvale highway reconstruction project.
From Monday morning until Wednesday, April 4 at 6 a.m., the signalized entrance to the school, located on Arapahoe Road east of 63rd Street and west of Westview Drive in Boulder, will be completely closed to traffic 24 hours a day. The other entrances to the school will not be impacted by the work. Crews will place barriers around the site and will be digging 14 feet into the ground, installing a storm sewer pipe, backfilling the earth, and repaving the roadway. Traffic on eastbound and westbound Arapahoe Road should not be impacted by the work.
“Our crews learned that the Boulder Valley School District is having their spring break next week, so they made rapid arrangements to reschedule work that had been planned later in the project,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Dan Marcucci. “We realize there may be some minor impacts to members of school during the closure, but we can now minimize the impacts to the majority of students, teachers, and administrators.”
During the upcoming closure, there will still be access to BVSD through the west administration building driveway and the east Votech building driveway, and busses will still have access to the school. The Jump route that usually pulls into BVSD via the signalized entrance will still pick up riders at the same bus stop but will pull into and out of the school at a different driveway access point.
The SH 7 project features two distinct sections: Cherryvale Road to Westview Drive, and Westview Drive to 75th Street. For the Cherryvale Road to Westview Drive section, SH 7 will be widened from two to four lanes with either a raised median or a center left-turn lane. From Westview Drive to 75th Street, the project will widen the road to add a center left turn lane and 10-foot shoulders. The railroad bridge near 75th Street will be replaced with wider structures to accommodate the roadway beneath.
New pedestrian facilities to be added will include a multi-use path for the entire project length and a sidewalk from Cherryvale Road to Westview Drive. On-street bike lanes and improved bus stops will also be incorporated.
Concrete Express has been awarded the contract for this $18 million dollar project that is anticipated to finish in mid-2014. Additionally, Xcel, CenturyLink, and the City of Boulder will work in coordination with CDOT for this project.
