Overhead Sign Installation and Ramp Relocation to Close Southbound I-225 Between I-70 and Colfax Avenue Tonight

February 16, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - AURORA – Tonight, February 16th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will install overhead signs and restripe southbound I-225 just north of Colfax Avenue as part of an interchange improvement project at I-225 and Colfax Avenue.

To complete the work, there will be a full closure of southbound I-225 between I-70 and Colfax Avenue from 10 p.m. tonight until 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

When work is completed Friday morning, the new permanent ramp from southbound I-225 to Colfax Avenue will be open, which is located nearly a half mile north of the current temporary exit.  New permanent exit signs and variable message signs will be posted to direct motorists to the new ramp.

In addition, the westbound 17th Place bridge over Tollgate will be open for motorists accessing Fitzsimmons Parkway.  The Eastbound 17th Place bridge from Fitzsimmons Parkway will open in the next few months.

During the closure, motorists needing access to southbound I-225 will be directed to exit onto either Peoria Street or Chambers Road from I-70 and then travel south to Colfax Avenue where access to southbound I-225 is available.

Delays are possible in the area and alternate routes are advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

This work is part of the second phase of the I-225/Colfax Avenue reconstruction project that constructs the southbound off-ramp to 17th Avenue and Colfax Avenue along with the southern portion of 17th Avenue to serve inbound traffic.

Hamon Contractors, Inc. is the contractor for this $17.9 million project that is scheduled to be complete by the end of December 2011.

A project that combines the third and fourth phases of the I-225/Colfax Avenue interchange improvement project is also underway. The final project constructs the southbound I-225 slip-ramp from 17th Place and widens the west side of the I-225 bridge over Colfax Avenue to accommodate the new slip-ramp. The northbound I-225 on-ramp from Colfax Avenue will be reconstructed to provide an elevated collector/distributor road between Colfax Avenue and 17th Place. In addition, the northbound I-225 slip-ramp will be reconstructed to provide access to 17th Place and the new 17th Place bridge over I-225 will be constructed.

This $11 million project that recently started will complete the interchange improvements. SEMA Construction Co. is the contractor for the project scheduled to be complete by the end of February 2013.
