Girder Installation and Bridge Deck Work to Close Federal Boulevard/Colfax Avenue Interchange This Week
The work will require full closures of Colfax Avenue and Federal Boulevard each night, weather permitting. Despite, the inclement weather forecasted for tonight, crews still plan on conducting the work.
“We will be installing 12 bridge girders as well as bridge deck panels over Colfax Avenue throughout the week,” said CDOT Project Engineer Jim Martin. “To safely complete the work, we must completely close both Federal Boulevard and Colfax Avenue; however, the detours utilize the ramps and are fairly minimal. Delays are still expected and we encourage motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.”
To install the girders and bridge deck panels, the following closures will be in place each night:
- Eastbound and Westbound Colfax Avenue: All lanes of eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue at Federal Boulevard will be closed each night from 7 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. the next day. Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closure.
- Northbound and Southbound Federal Boulevard at Colfax Avenue: All lanes of northbound and southbound Federal Boulevard at Colfax Avenue will be closed each night from 7 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. the next day. Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closure.
Major delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
This work is part of a project that replaces the Federal Boulevard bridge over Colfax Avenue with one that is wider to accommodate eight-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge as well as curb and gutter in the median. The existing bridge was originally constructed in 1960 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges.
Jalisco International, Inc. is the contractor for this $5.1 million project, which is scheduled to be complete in February 2013. The project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair and replace poor bridges.
