Bridge Demolition to Close Sheridan Boulevard at 6th Avenue Next Week
Traffic on westbound 6th Avenue has been shifted to the south approximately nine feet and crews will begin removal on the right edge of the westbound 6th Avenue bridge over Sheridan Boulevard. Traffic will remain in this configuration through the end of March 2012. To complete the work, the following lane closures will be in place:
- Northbound and Southbound Sheridan Boulevard at 6th Avenue: All lanes of northbound and southbound Sheridan Boulevard will be closed at 6th Avenue each night at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the following day. Detour: Motorists on northbound Sheridan Boulevard will be directed onto eastbound 6th Avenue to Federal Boulevard then northbound on Federal Boulevard and back to westbound 6th Avenue where they can exit to northbound Sheridan Boulevard. Motorists on southbound Sheridan Boulevard will be directed onto westbound 6th Avenue then southbound on Wadsworth Boulevard back to eastbound 6th Avenue where they can exit to southbound Sheridan Boulevard.
- Westbound 6th Avenue over Sheridan Boulevard: The right lane of westbound 6th Avenue at Sheridan Boulevard will be closed Monday and Wednesday at 10 p.m. with a second lane closing at 11 p.m. On Tuesday, the right lane of westbound 6th Avenue at Sheridan Boulevard will be closed at 7 p.m. with a second lane closing at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the following day.
In addition to the bridge demolition, motorists will encounter various daytime lane closures on Sheridan Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday as well as single lane closures on westbound 6th Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for median island work and light pole removal.
Major delays are possible on Sheridan Boulevard and on 6th Avenue and alternate routes are strongly advised. Motorists can take either Wadsworth Boulevard or Federal Boulevard to Colfax Avenue to avoid the construction zone. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
This work is part of a project that replaces the 6th Avenue bridge over Sheridan Boulevard. The original bridge was constructed in 1961 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges. The new bridge will be wider to accommodate wider sidewalks under the bridge along Sheridan Boulevard and at the four pedestrian islands. The medians north and south of the bridge will be modified to increase left turn storage capacity which will help with the flow of traffic on Sheridan Boulevard.
Edward Kraemer and Sons Inc. is the contractor for this $11.5 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of August 2013. The project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair or replace poor bridges.
