Bridge Demolition to Close Federal Boulevard and Colfax Avenue Tonight

December 19, 2011 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER – Tonight, December 19th, the Colorado Department of Transportation will demolition a portion of the eastern half of the Federal Boulevard (State Highway 88) bridge over Colfax Avenue (US 40).

The work will require a full closure of northbound Federal Boulevard as well as eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue. Despite the weather, the work is still scheduled to take place. If conditions worsen and the work is cancelled, information will be released.

To complete the work, the following lane closures will be in place:

  • Eastbound and Westbound Colfax Avenue: All lanes of eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue will be closed from 8 p.m. tonight until 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists.
  • Northbound Federal Boulevard at Colfax Avenue: All lanes of northbound Federal Boulevard will be closed from 7 p.m. tonight until 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday: Detour: Motorists on northbound Federal Boulevard will be detoured via the on and off ramps at Colfax Avenue.
  • Southbound Federal Boulevard at Colfax Avenue: Southbound Federal Boulevard will be reduced to one lane from 7 p.m. tonight until 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Major delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

This work is part of a project that replaces the Federal Boulevard bridge over Colfax Avenue with one that is wider to accommodate eight-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge as well as curb and gutter in the median. The existing bridge was originally constructed in 1960 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges.

Jalisco International, Inc. is the contractor for this $5.1 million project, which is scheduled to be complete in February 2013. The project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair and replace poor bridges.
