West Vail Pass Safety Improvements Completed on Time
EAGLE COUNTY – American Civil Constructors, Inc. (ACC), contractor for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be wrapping up work this week on the $9.5 million contract designed to improve safety along west Vail Pass.
ACC began work early June to make improvements to a ten-mile stretch of west Vail Pass in the east and west-bound lanes, between mile markers 180 and 190. The project has involved milling the asphalt surface and overlaying the highway with new asphalt, installing new concrete barrier and guardrail, repairing bridge joints, making drainage improvements and installing ‘Intelligent Transportation Systems’ to improve communications with travelers (e.g., electronic variable message boards and traffic sensors for indicating trip times).
This work had been greatly anticipated after an uncommonly wet spring which riddled the pass with potholes. While the initial contract work will be completed within the contract schedule, ACC crews will be on-site through next Wednesday, October 19, making additional drainage improvements between mile markers 177 and 178—work that was recently added to the project.
Funding for this project was made possible by Colorado FASTER. Colorado FASTER (Funding Advancements for Surface Treatment and Economic Recovery) is the funding established by The Colorado General assembly via Senate Bill 09-108 (www.coloradodot.info/projects/faster) in order to fund the repair of Colorado’s structurally deficient bridges and make safety improvements to Colorado’s key corridors.
Travelers should still plan for intermittent lane closures through October 19th from 7 a.m – 7 p.m. as crews finalize the extra drainage work. Please continue to Slow for the Cone Zone!.
