Bridge Replacement Project Begins at Federal Boulevard/Colfax Avenue
The project will replace the Federal Boulevard bridge over Colfax Avenue with one that is wider to accommodate eight-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge as well as curb and gutter in the median.
“The original structure was built in 1960 and is in poor condition,” said CDOT Project Engineer Jim Martin. “When the project is complete, we will have new infrastructure in place and safety will not only be improved for motorists, but pedestrians and bicyclists as well.”
To complete the project, the Federal Boulevard bridge over Colfax Avenue will be demolished and constructed in three phases to allow crews to keep the majority of lanes open on both highways during peak hours. However, Federal Boulevard will be in various temporary alignments throughout construction.
In addition, single lane closures can be expected Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Full closures of Federal Boulevard and Colfax Avenue are expected during bridge demolition and girder installation. More information will be released as the project progresses.
Delays are possible throughout construction and alternate routes are advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
Jalisco International, Inc. is the contractor for this $5.1 million project, which is scheduled to be complete in February 2013. The project is being funded by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair and replace poor bridges.
