US 6 Culvert Repair East of Rifle Begins Next Monday

September 12, 2011 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - A full closure of US 6 in place Sept 19 through 25.

GARFIELD COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Gould Construction of Glenwood Springs will begin culvert replacement project on US 6 a few miles east of Rifle on Monday, September 19th. The existing culvert is a 36-inch diameter metal culvert constructed in the early 1930’s. It will be replaced with a 60-inch by 38-inch diameter (somewhat an arch shape) concrete pipe, as well as a concrete entrance structure with a debris “filter” rack at the entrance to keep the culvert clear and help avoid highway flooding.

“We’re at least doubling the capacity of the existing culvert, when that culvert was operating effectively,” CDOT Resident Engineer Roland Wager said. “The new culvert is designed to handle a 100-year event, which has been calculated to be a flow rate of 105 cubic feet per second.”

TRAVEL IMPACTS: The project, contracted to Gould for $372,000, will involve removal and replacement of the asphalt across US 6. This will require a full closure of US 6 from the intersection of Hospital Hill Road to the intersection of Mile Pond Road, between mile points 93 and 93.3, starting at 6:30 a.m. on September 19 and lasting until 6:30 p.m., September 25. All access to local businesses will remain open—motorists can use I-70 at Rifle (Exit 90) and at Silt (Exit 97) interchanges during the closure period. Work after September 25 will include construction of the concrete intake, roadway asphalt patching, erosion control and striping. This work will require only single-lane closures between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The project will be complete by October 21, 2011. Thank you for going Slow for the Cone Zone!
