US 287 Emergency Railroad Repairs Begin Monday North of Lafayette

August 12, 2011 - UPCOMING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - CDOT to coordinate with RTD to reduce hazard to motorists.

BOULDER COUNTY — Beginning Monday, August 15 at 9 a.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be working in coordination with RTD to perform emergency railroad repairs on the tracks north of Lafayette at mile marker 307. Due to track deterioration, the roadway has become a hazard to motorists and railings must be brought level with the highway as soon as possible.

From Monday through Friday of next week, CDOT will assist RTD crews as they work around the clock to fix railings on the tracks of the US 287 right of way. To bring the tracks level with the highway and eliminate the significant “bump” drivers experience when crossing the tracks, the existing rails will be removed and replaced, and new concrete will be poured to reconfigure the roadway. Travel will be reduced to one lane in both northbound and southbound directions as early as 9 a.m. Monday and the speed limit will be reduced in the work zone from 60 MPH to 40 MPH. Motorists should expect major delays of up to 30 minutes and are urged to slow down for their safety and the safety of crew members.

“This particular crossing has been in need of repairs for some time and together, RTD and CDOT can restore the roadway to safe conditions for motorists,” said CDOT Maintenance Supervisor Chris Kelly. “Although travelers will experience delays next week, the roadway will be much safer in the future and will provide drivers with a smoother stretch of road.”

Traffic Impacts: Major delays of up to 30 minutes are expected starting at 9 a.m. Monday, August 15 through Friday, August 19 for 24 hours a day. Speeds will be reduced to 40 MPH and traffic will be reduced to one lane in both the northbound and southbound directions of US 287. Major delays are expected, especially during the morning and evening rush hours, and motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all road signs and flaggers, and to drive Slow for the Cone Zone. To receive email or text updates about road conditions in the area, visit www.coloradodot.info/ and click on the green cell phone icon in the upper right hand corner of the page.
