Sign Bridge Removal and Ramp Work to Impact Traffic on I-25 Next Week

August 12, 2011 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER — Next week, August 15th through August 18th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will remove a sign bridge on I-25 between Auraria Parkway and Speer Boulevard, begin paving operations, and conduct ramp work as part of the I-25 bridge replacement project over the South Platte River, also known as the Bronco Arch Bridge.

To complete this work, various lane closures will take place on both directions of I-25 as well as full closures of northbound I-25, including the ramps from Colfax Avenue to northbound I-25 throughout the week.

The following lane and ramp closures will be in effect, weather permitting:

Southbound I-25 between 23rd Avenue and Colfax Avenue

  • Sunday, August 14th, the left lane of southbound I-25 will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for surveying and shoulder paving.
  • Monday, August 15th, through Thursday, August 18th, a single lane on southbound I-25 will close at 7 p.m. with a second lane closing at 9 p.m. and third at 11 p.m. for paving operations.  All lanes will reopen each morning by 5 a.m.

Northbound I-25 between Speer Boulevard and Colfax Avenue

  • Sunday, August 14th, the right lane of northbound I-25 between Colfax Avenue and 17th Avenue will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for surveying and shoulder paving.
  • Monday, August 15th, and Tuesday, August 16th, a single lane on northbound I-25 between Auraria Parkway and Speer Boulevard will be closed with a second lane closing at 9 p.m. and a full closure of northbound I-25 at 11 p.m. for sign bridge removal.  All lanes will open by 5 a.m. each morning.  Detour: Motorists on northbound I-25 will be directed to Auraria Parkway then to Speer Boulevard where they can access northbound I-25.

Eastbound and Westbound Colfax Avenue Ramps to Northbound I-25

  • Monday, August 15th, through Thursday, August 18th, the ramps from eastbound and westbound Colfax Avenue will be closed to northbound I-25 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for paving operations, drainage work, and widening for future phasing for bridge construction.  Detour: Westbound traffic will be directed to Colfax Avenue to Federal Boulevard, Federal Boulevard to Speer Boulevard and then back to I-25.  Eastbound traffic will be directed to Colfax Avenue to Speer Boulevard and then back to I-25.

Delays are expected throughout the week and alternate routes are strongly advised.  CDOT would like to remind motorists to plan ahead, obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

The work is part of a bridge replacement project on I-25 between Colfax Avenue and 23rd Avenue.  The project replaces the I-25 bridges over the South Platte River, also known as the Bronco Arch Bridge.  The existing bridges were originally constructed in 1951 and are in poor condition.  The entire project is scheduled to be complete by the end of August 2013.

Lawrence Construction Co. is the contractor for this $16.3 million project, which is being funded with federal and state funds.
