Bridge Work to Close US 36 Near 80th Avenue Next Week

August 5, 2011 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - WESTMINSTER– August 8th through August 11th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will conduct bridge work at 80th Avenue over US 36. The work will require various full closures of US 36 each night.

To complete the bridge work, the following closures will be in place weather permitting:

  • Eastbound US 36 near 80th Avenue: One lane of eastbound US 36 near 80th Avenue will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, August 10th and 11th , starting at 9 p.m. with all lanes closing at 10 p.m.  All lanes of eastbound US 36 will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the next morning.  In addition, Monday and Tuesday, August 8th and 9th, two lanes of eastbound US 36 will close at 10 p.m. with lanes opening by 5:30 a.m. the next morning.
  • Westbound US 36 near 80th Avenue: One lane of westbound US 36 near 80th Avenue will be closed Monday and Tuesday, August 8th and 9th , starting at 8 p.m. with all lanes closing at 9 p.m.  All lanes of westbound US 36 will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the next morning. In addition, Wednesday and Thursday, August 10th and 11th, two lanes of westbound US 36 will close at 9 p.m. with lanes opening by 5:30 a.m. the next morning.

During the closure, motorists on westbound US 36 can exit at Federal Boulevard and take 72nd Avenue or 92nd Avenue to Sheridan Boulevard.  Motorists on eastbound US 36 can exit at Sheridan Boulevard and take 72nd Avenue or 92nd Avenue to Federal Boulevard.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

The girder installation is part of a project that replaces the 80th Avenue bridge over US 36.  The bridge was originally constructed in 1951 and is one of Colorado’s poor bridges.  When complete, the new bridge will be wider to accommodate an additional left turn lane from 80th Avenue to Oakwood Drive and a wider sidewalk.  The new bridge will also have greater vertical clearance and will be longer to accommodate the future widening of US 36.

Structures, Inc. is the contractor for this $7 million project being funded by CDOT and the City of Westminster.  The entire project is scheduled to be complete by the end of September 2011.
