Paving Operations to Cause Major Delays on Hampden Avenue Near Knox Court and Lowell Boulevard This Weekend

July 7, 2011 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER— On Saturday, July 9th and Sunday, July 10th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will pave Hampden Avenue near Knox Court/Lowell Boulevard in order to raise the grade of the pavement up approximately 10-12 inches, which will improve drainage and safety.

As a result of the work, motorists can expect major traffic impacts throughout the weekend.

To complete the asphalt paving operations, the following lane closures will be in place:

  • 5 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday: Only one lane of eastbound and westbound Hampden Avenue near Knox Court/Lowell Boulevard will be open from 5 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday. All right and left turns at the intersection will be prohibited and through traffic on Hampden Avenue will be free-flowing.  During this time, Knox Court/Lowell Boulevard will be completely closed and detour routes will be in place.
    • Knox Court Detour: Motorists can take Kenyon Avenue to Federal Boulevard where access to Hampden Avenue is available.
    • Lowell Boulevard Detour: Motorists can take the North Frontage Road to Federal Boulevard where access to Hampden Avenue is available.
  • Noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday: Only one lane of eastbound and westbound Hampden Avenue near Knox Court/Lowell Boulevard will be open, but all right turns at the intersection will be permitted. Left turns will not be allowed and detours will remain in place.

“We have over 3,000 tons of asphalt to place over the weekend in order to raise the intersection to the

appropriate grade,” said CDOT Project Engineer Kevin Sullivan.  “To complete the work, we will have two pavers on site the entire weekend, which means there will be a tremendous amount of activity.  For this reason, we are limiting the traffic movements, but will have one lane of Hampden Avenue open in each direction throughout the weekend.”

Major delays are expected during work hours and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.

The paving operations are part of a safety and mobility improvement project on US 285 between Federal Boulevard and Kipling Parkway.  The $40.1 million design-build project will reconstruct US 285 and replace three bridges among other improvements.

In all, the project will:

  • Reconstruct approximately four miles of US 285 between Federal Boulevard and Kipling Parkway
  • Replace the bridges on US 285 over Wadsworth Boulevard, Pierce Street and Federal Boulevard
  • Add additional through lanes on Wadsworth Boulevard and reconstruct the US 285/Wadsworth Boulevard intersection
  • Rehabilitate the bridge decks on US 285 over Estes Street, Bear Creek, Raleigh Street and Sheridan Boulevard
  • Widen the inside shoulder of US 285 between Wadsworth Boulevard and Sheridan Boulevard
  • Add an additional left turn lane from southbound Knox Court to eastbound US 285
  • Construct drainage and water quality improvements to accommodate potential future widening or other construction projects

Concrete Express Inc. and Tsiouvaras, Simmons, and Holderness, Inc. is the design-build team for this project that will be completed by the end of August 2011.
