I-70 West Vail Pass Construction Travel Update

July 21, 2011 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - Westbound I-70 backed up today from the top of Vail Pass due to slow moving oversized load through the construction zone.

EAGLE COUNTY – Contractors performing milling and paving in the westbound lanes of I-70 started removing  lane closures around 1:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon after an oversized truck slowed traffic flow to less than 20 mph in the single available lane.

Drivers are experiencing longer delays of up to 40 minutes descending the pass into Vail, as traffic attempts to recover from the congestion caused by the oversized load and two other disabled vehicles.  Unfortunately, the nature of the work prevented immediate reopening of the lane closures as the asphalt was too hot to allow vehicle traffic.  Traffic was backed up several miles and recovery is expected to take a couple of hours.
