Traffic Realignment to Close Various Ramps on Southbound I-225 This Week
The realignment will require full closures of two ramps along the corridor for approximately one week.
“In order to reconstruct and widen southbound I-225, we had to construct temporary ramps at Mississippi Avenue and Alameda Avenue,” said CDOT Project Engineer Mark Myers. “Now that the work is complete, the only way to safely realign southbound I-225 is to close the ramps while we remove the temporary ramps, move median barrier, restripe and open I-225 in its next alignment.”
To complete the work, the following ramp closures will be in place 24 hours a day until 5 a.m. on June 16th:
- Southbound I-225 to Mississippi Avenue: The ramp from southbound I-225 to Mississippi Avenue will be completely closed from 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8th until 5 a.m. on Thursday, June 16th. Detour: Motorists, including all truck traffic, can exit at Alameda Avenue and take Abilene Street south to Mississippi Avenue. Motorists needing access to the hospital can exit at Alameda Avenue and take Potomac Street south to Mississippi Avenue.
- Alameda Avenue to southbound I-225: The ramp from Alameda Avenue to southbound I-225 will be completely closed from 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 9th until 5 a.m. on Thursday, June 16th. Detour: Motorists can take Abilene Street south to Mississippi Avenue where access to southbound I-225 is available.
When the realignment is complete by 5 a.m. on June 16th, two lanes of northbound and southbound I-225 will be open in its normal realignment. The third lane in each direction will not open until the end of July or early August once crews have completed all of the median work.
In all, this project widens I-225 between 2nd Avenue and Mississippi Avenue to accommodate three lanes in each direction with an additional auxiliary lane. In addition to the widening, I-225 from north of Colfax Avenue to 2nd Avenue will be restriped to also accommodate three lanes in each direction and an additional auxiliary lane. A new 8-10 foot noise wall will be constructed near Mississippi Avenue to replace the deteriorating wooden fence and a second noise wall will be constructed near Potomac Circle.
Interstate Highway Construction is the contractor of this $20.3 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of August 2011.
