Upcoming Surface Improvement Project on Highways 109 & 50

May 3, 2011 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - OTERO COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be chip sealing two highway segments near La Junta and Fowler next week.

Flaggers will be alternating traffic through each work zone from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Delays up to 20 minutes can be expected in the following locations:

  • Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10

State Highway 109 – between mile 43 and mile 48 (seven miles south of La Junta)

  • Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12

U.S. 50 – between mile 352 and mile 357 (between Fowler and Manzanola)

Motorists are advised to observe the reduced speed limits posted through the project area due to the small, loose rocks prevalent in chip seal resurfacing areas.  Sweepers also will be in operation during work hours and continuing, if necessary, after chip sealing is complete.

Chip sealing is a preventative maintenance operation, extending a highway’s effective surface life three to five years.
