Rock Scaling on US 40 Mt. Harris Canyon This Friday

April 28, 2011 - WEATHER PENDING - Traffic control will be set up at 8 AM, expect delays throughout day. Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - ROUTT COUNTY – On Friday, April 29, the Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Yenter Companies will conduct some more rock scaling on US 40 in Mt. Harris Canyon, this time at mile point 113.7.

Crews will do some scaling by hand and also use airbags, inflated within cracks to bring down rock material. The work is weather dependent, as some inclement weather is forecasted.

CDOT and Yenter crews working in and monitoring this area in recent months detected some movement of rock at this site—the scaling is preventative maintenance to reduce the risk of rockfall that could impact the highway.

TRAVEL IMPACTS: Because of the unpredictable nature of rock scaling, including the size of material that may be brought down, motorists should plan for some potentially lengthy delays tomorrow. Crews will hold traffic while bringing rocks down, between 8 AM and 5 PM; the hold time will depend upon safety and clearing debris from the roadway. There will then be single-lane, alternating traffic through the work area. CDOT thanks motorists for going “Slow for the Cone Zone!”
