Widening Project Begins Next Week on Federal Boulevard Between Alameda Avenue and 6th Avenue
The project will reconstruct and widen approximately one mile of Federal Boulevard in concrete to accommodate an additional lane on northbound Federal Boulevard. When complete, there will be three lanes in each direction with a raised median.
“The project will make some significant improvements to this portion of Federal Boulevard, which will improve safety and mobility,” said CDOT Project Engineer Lora Rice-Archuleta. “The project will take nearly two years to complete and will require some significant traffic impacts during non-peak hours.”
Crews will begin the project with utility relocation and drainage work, which will take approximately one month to complete. Once this work is complete, crews will begin the widening and reconstruction of southbound Federal Boulevard by working in two to three block increments from 5th Avenue south to Alameda Avenue. Once the widening and reconstruction is complete on the southbound lanes, crews will work in the northbound lanes starting at Alameda Avenue and working in two to three block increments north to 6th Avenue. Crews will finish the project by constructing the raised median on Federal Boulevard.
Throughout the project, motorists can expect various single lane closures on northbound and southbound Federal Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the week of March 21st through March 25th, only one lane of northbound and southbound Federal Boulevard between 6th Avenue and 2nd Avenue will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day for storm sewer work.
Major delays are expected and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Fines for most infractions that occur in the work zone will be doubled.
In addition to the reconstruction and widening, the traffic signals at the Federal Boulevard/1st Avenue and Federal Boulevard/2nd Avenue intersections will be replaced and sidewalks will be widened to eight feet to improve safety for pedestrians.
Scott Contracting, Inc. is the contractor for this $7.8 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of January 2013. The project is being funded by CDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and the City and County of Denver.
