Bridge Replacement Begins on US 24 Near Leadville

March 31, 2011 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - Project moves forward with funding from FASTER.

LEADVILLE, COLO – The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor American Civil Constructors, Inc. (ACC), will begin a project to replace the Union Pacific Rail Road Bridge on US 24, approximately five miles north of Leadville.

The project was contracted to Colorado-based ACC for $ 4.6 million. Crews will mobilize to the site on April 4th and begin preparing for the demolition and replacement of the bridge, which was built in 1939 and is rated in poor condition (with a 16.8 out of 100 rating). The new bridge will be constructed with 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. Completion of the bridge replacement is scheduled for November 4, 2011.

TRAVEL IMPACTS: A small detour, called a shoe-fly, will divert travelers on US 24 around the bridge on a temporary road adjacent to the work area (it will be an at-grade RR crossing with a stop sign—no trains currently use this track). Traffic impacts on this project will be minimal; when necessary, however, there will be single-lane closures with delays less than 10 minutes during work hours – 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — to accommodate equipment coming in and out of traffic.  Crews will suspend work on holiday weekends, including local Boom Days held August 5-7, 2011.

Replacement of the US 24 UPRR Bridge was funded through the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, a government-owned business entity within CDOT.  The Colorado General assembly created the statewide Bridge Enterprise via Senate Bill 09-108, also known as FASTER (Funding Advancements for Surface Treatment and Economic Recovery www.coloradodot.info/projects/faster). The purpose of the Bridge Enterprise is to complete designated bridge projects that involve the financing, repair, reconstruction and replacement of bridges designated as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete, and rated “poor” by CDOT.
