Highway 86 Improvement Project Begins
The Colorado Department of Department (CDOT) project includes reconstructing 2 ½ miles of highway with concrete pavement, a new storm drain system, retention ponds, curb and gutter, a raised median and seeding. Other poor sections of roadway, outside of the reconstruction zone, will be resurfaced with concrete or asphalt, as necessary.
Three segments of SH 86 will be upgraded:
1. From North Crowfoot Valley Road to just north of the Ridge Road/5th Street intersection
2. Between I-25 and Trail Boss Drive
3. From the Ridge Road/5th Street intersection and east 1/3 mile
Work is underway on Segment 1, with a left lane closure in place on eastbound and westbound SH 86, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, primarily for median storm drain installation.
Following the storm sewer work, scheduled for completion in May, concrete reconstruction begins along the same segment. The eastbound portion will be reconstructed first, with eastbound/westbound traffic reduced to a single lane along the westbound segment. Upon completion, the traffic pattern will switch to the eastbound side, allowing westbound to be reconstructed. A 35 mph speed limit remains in place while Founders Parkway is reduced to a single lane in each direction.
Segment 1 is scheduled for completion in November 2011.
Work on Segment 2 begins in May 2011. Various lanes will be closed along Founders Parkway and on the I-25 on- and off-ramps, primarily at night, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, for storm drain pipe and inlet installation. Concrete pavement panels also will be replaced on Founders between Allen Way and Trail Boss Drive.
Segment 2 is scheduled for completion in June 2011.
Rotomilling and asphalt paving operations are expected to begin on Segment 3 in late September or October, and continue through early November. Work is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.
The entire project is scheduled for completion in November 2011.
Castle Rock Construction Company of Centennial, Colo. is the prime contractor for the $6.3 million project.
Since numerous segments could impact traffic for the duration of the project, advisories will be distributed, as necessary, by CDOT and/or the contractor, updating the traveling public regarding schedule changes, additional lane closure requirements and possible delays. Information also is available by calling the project information hotline at (303) 814-6084.
Traffic information about this or other CDOT projects is on the cotrip.org website or by calling 511.
