Second Closure of US 138 Scheduled for Next Week for Bridge Replacement
The project replaces the timber bridge on US 138 near milepost 14 as well as the culvert on US 138 near milepost 42 with concrete box culverts. Both structures were originally constructed in 1930 and are two of Colorado’s poor bridges.
To begin the project, crews completely closed US 138 at milepost 14, which is near Iliff, in order to set the concrete box. US 138 has since reopened to traffic at this location and crews will complete the remainder of the work under single-lane alternating traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work is expected to be complete at this location by the end of November 2010, weather permitting.
With the majority of work complete at milepost 14, crews will soon begin work at milepost 42, which is near State Highway (SH) 59. As a result, a full closure of US 138 at milepost 42 will be required starting at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, November 15th and continuing until approximately 5 p.m. on Monday, November 22nd. During the closure, motorists can take SH 59 south to I-76 and then I-76 west to SH 55. Once on SH 55, travel north to US 138.
Once US 138 at milepost 42 reopens to traffic on November 22nd, crews will still have some work to complete to finish the new structure. As a result, motorists can expect single-lane alternating traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work is expected to be complete at this location in early December 2010, weather permitting.
Zak Dirt, Inc. is the contractor for this $593,000 project that is being funded through Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery (FASTER). The entire project should be complete by early December 2010.
