Culvert Work Scheduled to Begin Next Week

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close the westbound exit ramp at the Interstate 70/Herman Gulch Interchange next week for culvert replacement work.   Herman Gulch is the unnamed Exit 218, about two miles east of the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Beginning on Monday, November 29, the ramp from westbound I-70 to the Herman Gulch area will be closed for approximately three weeks, allowing the culvert that runs under the ramp to be replaced.

“After we examined it, we noticed the culvert was failing and could collapse sooner rather than later,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Bill Scheuerman.  “We need to get it replaced now before the weather and excessive snow becomes too much of a factor and mainly before next spring’s runoff.”

The interchange provides access to the U.S. Forest Service’s Herman Gulch trailhead and parking area.   This area will remain open while the ramp is closed.   Users who want to access the area will need to continue west two miles to the Loveland Pass exit – #216 – go under I-70 and turn left onto U.S. 6 (eastbound I-70 ramp), continuing east on I-70 to Exit 218.

American Civil Constructors, Inc. of Littleton, Colo., is the contractor for the $94,000 project.
