Traffic Realignment Scheduled for this Weekend to Cause Major Delays on Parker Road and Arapahoe Road

October 21, 2010 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - ARAPAHOE COUNTY – This weekend, October 23rd and October 24th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will realign Parker Road to the west approximately 200 feet and eastbound Arapahoe Road to the south approximately 25 feet to accommodate the construction of the new Parker Road bridge over Arapahoe Road. This temporary alignment will be in place through May 2011.

“Since the project started in June 2010, we have been constructing the new ramps at the interchange so we can utilize a couple of them during this traffic realignment,” said CDOT Project Engineer Ed Bullard.  “While two of the three new ramps will be operational and the majority of the through lanes and turn lanes will remain open, we still expect delays for much of the project, especially during peak hours.”

To complete the traffic realignment, the following lane closures will be in place on Parker Road and Arapahoe Road from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. on Monday.  Major delays are possible and alternate routes are strongly advised.

  • All lanes of northbound Parker Road will be closed intermittently at Arapahoe Road to allow crews to restripe and realign northbound Parker Road. Motorists will take the new ramp from northbound Parker Road to Arapahoe Road where they can go east or west on Arapahoe Road.  Access to northbound Parker Road is available by turning left on Arapahoe Road and connecting to northbound Parker Road via the new ramp.
  • Various single and double lane closures will be in place on southbound Parker Road to allow crews to restripe and realign southbound Parker Road.
  • Eastbound Arapahoe Road will be reduced to one through lane.
  • Westbound Arapahoe Road will be reduced to one through lane.

Once the traffic realignment is in place by 6 a.m. on Monday, October 25th, motorists can expect some changes in various turn movements and in the overall configuration of traffic.  Below are details of the temporary traffic alignment:

  • Northbound Parker Road: Three through lanes of northbound Parker Road will remain open.  Motorists needing access to either eastbound or westbound Arapahoe Road will have to take the new ramp, which is located south of the existing intersection.
  • Southbound Parker Road: Only two through lanes will remain open on southbound Parker Road as well as one left turn lane from southbound Parker Road to eastbound Arapahoe Road (this will create delays during peak hours and alternate routes are advised).  The existing triple-lane ramp from southbound Parker Road to westbound Arapahoe Road will remain open.
  • Westbound Arapahoe Road: Two through lanes will remain open on westbound Arapahoe Road as well as the two left turn lanes from westbound Arapahoe Road to southbound Parker Road. The new ramp from westbound Arapahoe Road to northbound Parker Road will also be open.
  • Eastbound Arapahoe Road: Two through lanes will remain open on eastbound Arapahoe Road as well as all three left turn lanes from eastbound Arapahoe Road to northbound Parker Road. There will still be a turn lane for motorists needing access to southbound Parker Road.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  The speed limit has been reduced to 45 MPH throughout much of the project and alternate routes are advised.

This realignment is part of an interchange improvement project that constructs a grade-separated interchange that will carry Parker Road over Arapahoe Road.  Hamon Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for this $32 million project, which should be complete by the end of November 2011.
