US 40 Red Dirt Hill Safety Improvement
About the Project
This is a safety improvement project located on US 40 between Granby and Tabernash in Grand County. (Mile Points 217 to 219)
Work will include:
- Asphalt resurfacing for both eastbound and westbound US 40
- Shoulder widening
- Barrier and guardrail installation
- New signage
- Striping
- Culvert and drainage work
This project is scheduled to begin May 12, 2025 and is expected to be complete by late October 2025.

Project Benefits
- A smooth highway improves safety and quality of the driving experience
- Updated striping and guardrails reduce incidences of serious crashes
- Construction of wider shoulders will improve safety including:
- A larger recoverable area on the side of the roadway
- Reducing the potential of crashes from vehicles veering off the main roadway
- Culvert improvements provide the following necessary enhancements:
- Accommodate higher accumulations of rainfall
- Lower the risks associated with such instances as flooding
- Maintain safe driving conditions
Work Schedule
- Work will occur during daytime hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday
Traffic Impacts
Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:
- During widening, two way traffic will be maintained
- During paving and striping operations, motorists may encounter alternating lane closures and delays up to 20 minutes can be expected during working hours
- Speed limit will be reduced to 45 MPH through the work zone during work hours
