US 40 Red Dirt Hill Safety Improvement

About the Project

This is a safety improvement project located on US 40 between Granby and Tabernash in Grand County. (Mile Points 217 to 219)

Work will include:

  • Asphalt resurfacing for both eastbound and westbound US 40
  • Shoulder widening
  • Barrier and guardrail installation
  • New signage
  • Striping
  • Culvert and drainage work

This project is scheduled to begin May 12, 2025 and is expected to be complete by late October 2025.

Project Benefits

  • A smooth highway improves safety and quality of the driving experience
  • Updated striping and guardrails reduce incidences of serious crashes
  • Construction of wider shoulders will improve safety including:
    • A larger recoverable area on the side of the roadway
    • Reducing the potential of crashes from vehicles veering off the main roadway
  • Culvert improvements provide the following necessary enhancements:
    • Accommodate higher accumulations of rainfall
    • Lower the risks associated with such instances as flooding
    • Maintain safe driving conditions

Work Schedule

  • Work will occur during daytime hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • During widening, two way traffic will be maintained
  • During paving and striping operations, motorists may encounter alternating lane closures and delays up to 20 minutes can be expected during working hours
  • Speed limit will be reduced to 45 MPH through the work zone during work hours
