Project Overview

This multi-bridge maintenance project includes three locations, this spring of 2020:

  • U.S. Highway 160 at MP 143.9 over the San Juan River on the east side of Pagosa Springs.
  • CO Highway 151 North of Arboles at MP 18.7 over the Piedra River.
  • US 550 at MP 32 in Hermosa over Hermosa Creek.

Crews will begin working on the U.S. Highway 550 bridge, located at Hermosa Creek in the Animas Valley north of Durango at MP 32 on May 11th. Work is expected to be completed by mid-June.

Some follow up tasks still need to be accomplished on the U.S. 160/550 high bridge over the Animas River in south Durango., including final pavement marking and landscaping along the right-of-way. This work is scheduled to start in early May.

As part of CDOT’s Whole System — Whole Safety initiative, this project will not only create better and safer driving conditions for travelers, it will also help to extend the lifespan of the bridges. The bridge rehabilitation project is part of the RAMP Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program and will consist of:

  • removing and replacing existing asphalt and deck concrete
  • installing waterproofing membrane
  • removing and replacing bridge expansion device
  • new paving of roadway approaches to the bridge
  • drainage improvements

Travel Impacts

  • Working hours will be from 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Expect one lane traffic, a temporary traffic signal during non-work hours, or flagger control during construction activities.
  • First Street access to and from U.S. 160 will be closed. All access will be via 2nd Street.
  • Pedestrians will be required to cross over to the sidewalks not adjacent to construction activities.
  • Expect single-lane closures throughout the duration of the project.
  • Maximum speed of 30 mph within the work zone will be strictly enforced.
  • Motorists should slow down, drive with caution and give themselves extra travel time.
  • Lane width restriction of 10’ will be in place for the duration of the project.
